STARKVILLE, Miss.—Members of Mississippi State’s Famous Maroon Band are among students from a dozen state institutions of higher learning who have been selected to participate in the inaugural Mississippi Intercollegiate Honor Band.
Taking place March 23-25 at Hinds Community College in Raymond, the event will include three days of rehearsal culminating with a Saturday concert.
Open to all, the concert will be held at 1 p.m. in Hogg Auditorium at Hinds Community College’s Cain-Cochran Hall. Admission is free.
Participating students were selected by audition earlier this year. In addition to ݮƵand Hinds Community College, they represent Blue Mountain College, Delta State University, Itawamba Community College, Jones County Junior College, Mississippi College, Mississippi Valley State University, Northwest Mississippi Community College, Pearl River Community College, University of Southern Mississippi and William Carey University.
Over the course of the clinic, the students will receive instruction from guest clinician Ray Cramer, Indiana University professor and director of bands emeritus.
“We are pleased to have this event for the very first time, bringing together some of the finest student musicians in our state for a weekend of music making,” said event co-organizer Elva Kaye Lance, ݮƵdirector of bands. “Ray Cramer is a legend in our field, and having him as our clinician for this event means that the students participating will have a terrific experience.”
“We are excited to assemble this talented group as we celebrate our state’s bicentennial this year,” added Lance, also an instructor of music.
