Provost Candidate Two announced for May 10 open forum

²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ and the Search Committee for Provost and Executive Vice President invite interested members of the campus community to attend public presentations by each finalist.

—Candidate Two: Dr. John Buckwalter, Friday, May 10, 4-5 p.m., Colvard Union, Foster Ballroom M

John Buckwalter, PhD currently serves as the Betty L. Tointon Dean of the College of Human Ecology (Health and Human Sciences as of June 1, 2019) at Kansas State University. The college is comprised of four departments, a school, multiple centers and institutes, and has an enrollment of roughly 2600 students. Academic programs include Hospitality Management, Nutrition and Health, Nutritional Sciences, Sensory Analysis, Dietetics, Athletic Training, Early Childhood Education, Personal Financial Planning, Human Development and Family Science, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Couples and Family Therapy, Family and Consumer Sciences, Apparel and Textiles, Interior Design, Conflict Resolution, Gerontology, Kinesiology and a developing Physician Assistant program. 

Prior to joining Kansas State University in 2013, he spent six years at the University of Texas at Arlington as chair of the Department of Kinesiology and then as the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies in the College of Education and Health Professions. Prior to moving to Texas, he spent 12 years at the Medical College of Wisconsin where he began as a Post-Doctoral Fellow and eventually rose to the rank of Associate Professor of Anesthesiology.   During his time in Wisconsin, he developed a primary research agenda related to the autonomic and cardiovascular control of blood flow during exercise. Dr. Buckwalter’s research has been supported by a number of sources including grants from both the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association.  

Originally from Arkansas, Dr. Buckwalter earned a B.A. in Spanish and B.S. in Health and Physical Education at Centenary College in Shreveport Louisiana and both a MS and PhD in Kinesiology from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. He is a member of the American Physiological Society, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine. In addition, he is currently the Chair of the board for APLU’s Board on Human Sciences. 

For the 2011-2012 academic year, Dr. Buckwalter was one of roughly 50 individuals nationwide selected for the American Council on Education’s Fellowship program, one of the nation’s oldest programs designed to train senior academic leaders.  As part of the Fellowship Dr. Buckwalter spent the year on the campus of Texas Christian University shadowing and being mentored by the Chancellor and Provost of the institution.
