STARKVILLE, Miss.—An upcoming Mississippi State Orators Lecture Series event will spotlight artificial intelligence and its place in the creative process.
Scheduled for Nov. 7, 4 p.m., in Griffis Hall’s Forum Room, J. Adam Jones’ lecture “The End of Algorithms (Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Machine)” is part of the yearlong series theme “Writing Humanity’s Next Chapter: Artistic Expressions in the Time of AI.” Jones teaches in ݮƵDepartment of Computer Science and Engineering and directs the university’s High-Fidelity Virtual Environments Lab.
The event is free and open to the public. Shahram Rahimi, ݮƵDepartment of Computer Science and Engineering professor and Gloria and Douglas Marchant Endowed Chair, will provide introductory remarks, and Donna Clevinger, Judy and Bobby Shackouls Honors College Senior Faculty Fellow and professor of communication/theatre, will moderate the lecture.
Jones’ work focuses on combining virtual and extended realities, psychology and visual neuroscience to better understand how humans experience and interact with the world. He is the recipient of a National Science Foundation CAREER award that will fund his research, teaching and public outreach for the next five years.
Before joining MSU, Jones was a University of Mississippi faculty member in both the computer and information science and neuroscience programs. The Jones County native earned his Ph.D. in computer science with a certification in cognitive science from MSU, in addition to bachelor’s and master’s degrees in computer science from the land-grant institution. He completed postdoctoral fellowships in human-centered computing at Clemson University and in the Mixed Reality Lab at the University of Southern California’s Institute for Creative Technologies.
The Orators Lecture Series invites speakers, representing various campus disciplines, to engage and enrich the campus and local communities through research, coursework and public forums. These scholarly presentations are made possible through the generous support of the Shackouls Honors College and through its on- and off-campus interdisciplinary partnerships.
